Tom uses regenerative farming by no-till/strip-trilling his corn/soybean rotation as well as utilizing cover crops, small grains, and livestock and all these practices continue to develop and evolve.
In 1991 Tom started no-tilling as a matter of necessity when he couldn’t afford to upgrade his machinery. In ’93 he had to get a full-time job as well as farm. No-till bought him time and balanced his full-time job in town as well as farming for 21 years. He decided it was time for change and slowly sold off his equipment and started to attend regenerative farming meetings to see what he could improve–making some mistakes a long way. In 2017 he added cover crops and made some mistakes there.
He was asked to become a mentor and agreed so he could share what he learned–successes and failures. While he wouldn’t consider a “soil evangelist” he wants to share his experience using regenerative farming and soil-healthy practices. He says it’s fun to connect with those who are “new and untested” and share what he has lived and learned.
