Our family farm currently utilizes strip till, no-till, cover crops, reduced and prescription fertilizer and herbicide application. We rotational graze our cow/calf beef herd. Our confinement hog finishing manure is tested and injected using strip till unites mounted on our liquid manure tank. We have two creeks, a lake, an open drainage ditch, and over 220 acres of woodland, prairie, and CREP ground on our farms.
Stewardship and conservation have always been a priority for Brad and me. We adopted chisel plowing in the 1970s, attempted no-till soybeans before mechanical technology allowed success, so put the concept on the shelf. We invested in equipment when current technology offered better row cleaners, seed placement, seed-to-soil contact, and closing the seed trench. We were early adopters of prescription application of fertilizer and crop protection products and the first farm in Martin County to earn the Minnesota Water Quality Certification. Improved soil health has been the biggest reward.
As a former school teacher, I love to share what I have learned. It is natural to advocate for something you have a passion for. My parents modeled and instilled an attitude and appreciation for community service. Brad and I are committed stewards and believe community services is our duty.
