Brad farms with his daughter and son-in-law on their farm, Horizon Farms, in Renville County. They strip till all of their corn and apply nitrogen in the spring, going on with the planter and is side dressed. Cover crops are planted at side dressing, if needed they Y drop at tassel as well. Soybeans are all no-tilled and cover crops are applied after harvest. All the acres on Horizon Farms are planted to cover crops. Wheat has been added back onto some acres providing great cover crop opportunities. Beef cattle are grazing corn stalks and covers, providing a great balance of forage after harvest.
After witnessing severe soil erosion during the winters of 2013 – 2015, they decided to find a way to successfully farm while improving their soils. Brad and his family value how helpful people have been in talking about different management options and soil health and they are happy to help others get started.
