Central sands research farm hosting free field day August 19

August 19, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm

Free
The Rosholt Research Farm Field Day will take place on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 9:30am to 1pm. The event is free and lunch will be provided, but registration is required (link below).

Research at the Rosholt Research Farm addresses regional issues and agricultural practices that are typical in the central sands region of Minnesota. The farm’s sandy soil and need for supplemental irrigation typifies the challenges that many producers face on the outwash sands of west-central and central Minnesota. Data collection started in 2011 and the work has since been expanded to several additional research projects.

At the field day, you’ll learn about:

  • Nitrogen Management for Corn in Irrigated Sands: Where does the applied N go and what can be done to improve its efficient use? – Fabián G. Fernández, Ph.D., Nutrient management specialist, University of Minnesota Extension
  • Irrigation Management for Profitable Crop Production and Water Quality Protection – Vasudha Sharma, Ph.D., Irrigation specialist, University of Minnesota Extension
  • Kernza: A New Perennial Grain Crop to Improve Drinking Water Quality – Jacob M. Jungers, PhD, Assistant Professor Dept. of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, University of Minnesota
  • Adding Value to Kernza: An Update on AURI’s Efforts to Identify Processing Methods and Early Supply Chain & Market Opportunities for Kernza in Minnesota – Riley Gordon, AURI Engineer

There will also be booths by partner agencies. Lunch will be prepared by Minnewaska Meats. The Rosholt Research Farm is located at 910 Old Highway 28, Villard, Minnesota, 56385.

Register online or call Holly Kovarik (District Manager, Pope SWCD) at 320-634-5327 to reserve your spot

Funding for the work at the Rosholt Research Farm has been provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR), Minnesota’s Agricultural Research and Education Council (AFREC), and the Clean Water Fund as part of the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment.

The Rosholt Research Farm is a partnership between University of Minnesota Extension, Pope Soil and Water Conservation District, Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District, Forever Green, the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
