Karl has been strip-tilling ahead of corn since the fall of 2018, and no tilling soybeans since Spring of 2019. He started using cover crops in 2019 as well. He has also been aerial applying cover crops recently, but has drilled in cover crops after harvest in soybean stubble as well with good results.
Karl says,
“Once I attended a strip till field day, and saw the rainfall simulator, I was convinced, I need to do something different. A year or two later, I started strip-tilling and no tilling. I’ll admit, it was a little nerve-wracking at first, but I have grown good crops ever since I started this journey. I have since upgraded my planter with a better downforce system, and have other ideas to upgrade equipment to perform even better. Since I started my soil health journey, I’ve seen improved water infiltration, less water ponding after rain events, less weed pressure. I have one field that was really tough to strip till the first time in the Fall of 2019 is so much easier pulling the strip-tiller now.
I like to help others in their soil health journey if they are willing to try. I have learned so much, and enjoy helping others get away from conventional farming methods. And I can offer custom strip till if someone near me wants to get started with their soil health journey.”
