Bob currently grazes cattle and goats on two different farms and raises all feed (hay and corn silage) for brood cow herd and goats, while buying grain mix for youngstock from a local elevator. He calves his crossbred cows (65) year around and sells meat directly to consumers. He hopes to do that same with his goat herd in the future.
Bob got started with no till practices 7 years ago with good results and currently 100% of his fields are no till, including new seeding of alfalfa. He started seeing results shortly after commencement of OM soil test on one field went from 1% to 2% in four years. He integrated cover crops around 6 years ago. Bob also experimented with interseeding using a drill into CS corn and aerial seeding of cover into standing corn around Labor Day with varied results. He has experienced exceptional pasture growth with rotational/managed grazing and he’s seen increased forage growth on areas of pasture previously under permanent pasture.
Bob was compelled to become a mentor for the Minnesota Soil Health Coalition to share what he’s learned from his own experiences with others. He takes great pride in seeing others improve their situation through regenerative practices and information sharing.
