My wife Jodie and I farm 600 acres in a corn-soybean rotation near Franklin MN. We tried our first cover crops in 2016 and transitioned acres to no-till with cover crops over the next 2 years. We are 100% converted now and working to improve diversity with early interseeded mixes in corn and a mix following soybeans. We plant everything green and are working to establish opportunities to graze cattle.
Recognizing farming’s tight margins, I was encouraged by local examples of no-till implementation and success in cost reduction possibilities with cover crop implementation. We have since trimmed chemical and fertilizer expenses, and eliminated tillage passes. I have witnessed a notable impact on weed pressure with cover crops, and improved soil structure in a short time. We have had challenges some years with cover establishment, but that seems more dependant on weather than tactics.
